The Girl in Cultural Frames - African (2021)
“The Girl in Cultural Frames (African)” explores how cultural patterns shape our perception of identity, freedom, and belonging.
In this series, I turn to traditional ornamental systems — symbols that once defined entire communities and guided social behavior. Many of these cultural codes have lost their relevance, yet their echoes still influence how we see ourselves and each other. Some of these inherited frameworks feel protective; others can be restrictive, even when their original meaning has already dissolved.
By placing the female figure inside a symbolic structure derived from African ornamentation, I reflect on how cultural memory continues to frame the individual — sometimes gently, sometimes rigidly. The figure becomes a point of dialogue between personal freedom and inherited norms, between self-perception and the expectations that surround us.
This work is an invitation to reconsider which “frames” we carry consciously… and which continue to shape us without our awareness.
